weekend:
wednesday: we took a walking tour of montmartre, which was super fun. it was nice out, too! montmartre has the highest point, and you can see all of paris:
here is the famous sacre coeur:
and look, joan of arc!
montmartre is also where all the famous bohemian caberets are (yes, moulin rouge), including the famous le chat noir. when we were walking...i saw un chat noir!
haha yes loved it.
thursday: we went to the OPERA to see an OPERA (orphee et eurydice). it's more of a ballet opera. each character is played by two people- a dancer and a singer. it was pretty amazing. the story itself is super sad (eurydice dies on their wedding day, orpheus can go into the underworld to bring her back, but only if she doesnt look at her, they're almost back but then he looks at her, she's dead for good) but the dancing was amazing.
opera house. gorgeous.
inside. gorgeous.
friday:
we had french painting class in the louvre again, and after class we wandered over to the mona lisa. i had seen her before, but it's always fun to look at her again. and by fun, i mean confusing. i don't get why she's so amazingly famous. i'm thinking it's because of sensationalist stories and people trying to steal her left and right and now, with the da vinci code everyone's all aaaah la jaconde!
and then i went to haagen dazs and had...ICE CREAM FONDUE. oh. my. god. it was so amazing. for 25€ you get a two-person fondue and two drinks. 3 scoops of each flavor (6 different flavors: belgian chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, coffee, cookies and cream, bananoffee), melty chocolate, fruit, cookie and brownie pieces, and a topping. we had hazelnut. IT WAS SO GOOD. holy crap, the goodness, i can't even handle it. why does not this exist in the US.
AAAAH OH MY GOD
and then i saw juno again! and it was amazing. parisian movie theatres are really weird. there's no lobby, and they're very small. the theatres themselves weren't too small, but they weren't very sloped, but the movie screen was higher up, so that wasn't a big problem. it did save vertical space, which is what i think they were going for. and, since there's no lobby at the theatre, we had to loiter outside, and wait in a line outside to get into the actual theatre. and i guess they run the shows pretty close together (and parisians don't make a HUGE MESS out of the theatre) because we went in like 5 mins after the last one let out. but we were lined up outside (outside outside. good thing it was nice out) for like 10-15 mins.
satyday:
picnic at invalides! it was super tasty and super fun. i was on the meat team (we divided up into teams to get food). my goodness i love meat. we got turkey, salami (i'd never realized how amazing salami was until i got here. hopefully it is as good in the US. because now i'm always craving salami), roast beef (i've also acclimated to bloody meat. i dont know about the whole 'it's more tender' thing though, because in my experience it's harder to slice through because things are more...stringy? but i do enjoy it now), and these bacon wrapped cheese things that were SO DAMN GOOD.
good thing i don't have pictures of the actual picnic:
but here is the field we were at. that's pont alexandre in the background (bridge over seine, with the coloumns and the gold statues) and le grand palais is the greenhouse looking thing. it wasn't opened though, so we went to le petit palais, right across the street, and looked at art there for a little. but then we got thirsty and went to find ice cream. i got an amazing smoothie at myberry (pinkberry ripoff) that had orange juice, mango, something else, and PASSIONFRUIT. mmm soo goood.
and then i tried to go up the eiffel tower with my language partners, but the line was over 45 mins long, so we were like screw that and we went to the party at the fond. where i taught patrick (language partner) lots of american slang. it was funny.
sunday:
even though chinese new year was actually thursday, all the celebrations were on sunday. and we went to CHINATOWN, aka the thirteenth arrondissement. we had CHINESE FOOD aaaah i miss chinese food. i had noodle soup with roast duck. and it was AMAZING. but i forgot to take a picture of it because when it finally arrived i was so damn hungry that i just dug in. and we also had nems (springrolls, i think vietnamese?) and shiu mai. the shiu mai were kind of weak, very small, but they still tasted delish.
and, chinese new year parade!
the guy with the beard was a badass.
